I gotta say, I don't like this town much right now. This town, or the glut of towns that surround it, or really any of the people who drive around it. Or the rest of the idiots like me who live east and work west.
I need books on tape and a cell phone headset, because I have to do this twice a day for a year, whether I like it or not.
Job's ok, though, so long as I can keep my cynical/humorous side on hold for 8 hours a day. And there are a great number of people there who will be committed to my physical, professional, and socio-emotional well-being. I think it will be sort of like living in the perfect society, but in order to live in the perfect society you maybe have to pretend you're a little dumber than you are. I guess I can deal with that. We got to dance around in a circle hitting sticks together with the music teacher today.
Sorry. Life's not really so bad. It's just been kind of a long and lonely week. But all signs point upward. |

[May. 9th, 2007|11:36 pm] |
It's one of those times in life when anything you do that makes you happy seems directly associated with the unwise and futurely disasterous.
On the upside, LOST was off the hook once again tonight. The Live together, Die alone dichotomy came back and slapped John in the face while Jack tried to reestablish his allegiance to the group, but with uber over the top leadership/screw everyone overness. I feel like their roles are about to be reversed somehow, but how? I feel like they will have to redeem the value of Locke's faith journey over the science, etc., somehow. And they played a dirty trick by pretending like the end of Ben's flashback sequence brought his story full circle in any way. That was a bit of a disappointment- it pretended like his story was cohesive, somehow, with the whole bad father thing tied to Sawyer/Locke, and him ending it, but the story they told is clearly missing some element of Ben's journey- and they didn't highlight a particular mystery- we just know it's missing some set of unknown events that they don't even clue us into. The Jacob stuff has potential though, if they keep it away from the hokey. I almost feel like they've raised the stakes so high that the coolness factor will never live up to what we expect. Oh, and what do we make of the fact that Locke's never seen a dead guy on the island but a whole bunch of other people have?
And by we, I mean clearly only me, since I am an enormous dork.
Ok. One more final, and then I'm done with college. Life is so weird. |

| For British Eyes Only! |
[Apr. 27th, 2007|09:18 am] |
So, there was this whole fiasco with the library, and in my head it took on all the significance of my life's current ineffectuality, plus they were going to charge me 100 dollars for a book I returned, which is ridiculous, but then it got fixed, but I still want to send a letter expressing my extreme displeasure with the situation, because I really enjoy being right and letting others know it, essentially.
But, as it turns out, the person in charge of such things is named Nigel Butterwick. How can I write an angry letter to Nigel Butterwick? He is clearly a precious, doddering old British man, which is probably why the library is in such poor shape, but you can't blame Nigel for that!
So. I am going to have to reinvent him in my imagination for this to work correctly. So, please send me suggestions of the most evil British man to ever live, so that I can envision him and write my appropriately scathing letter.
Thank you. |

Well, after literally half a gallon of fake Crystal Light and not a whole lot less hummus, I now have a 37-page thesis draft completed and sent to my advisor. And I shaved my legs tonight. I am kind of like a goddess. The goddess of chickpea paste and Lutheran-Catholic ecumenism, perhaps. And what better kind of goddess is there? All shall love me and despair... or at least develop vegetarian tendencies and fellow feeling toward former religious foes. |

Someone I don't even know and probably wouldn't even recognize if I saw on the street (such are the charms of facebook) just got tagged in a picture of Ireland. Just a name from that semester brings me back to the safe danger of that adventure. It was a very small foreigness, but it was ours, and at least in my memory, I wasn't scared as we floated around and gathered up new places to take back with us. I'm missing that bubble- whatever it was- that surrounded me the whole time.
Mostly I'm just a stupid oyster, I think, who isn't careful about where she parks her shell before she has to jump out and find a new one. And it's good to face the unknown sometimes, but it would be nice if someone would tell me what, exactly, that unknown contains. |

So, I recently followed a link from somebody's facebook profile to their myspace. Now, myspace in general kinda creeps me out, what with its loud music, excessive colors, difficult to read text, and general emo tendencies. But the real problem is that the page always comes up too wide for the browser, so in order to look at the page you have to not only go up and down but left to right. Is this just a problem with Mozilla? Or does the entire myspace world deal with this on a regular basis?
I don't know why this seemed like such a compelling question right at this moment. But it did. I worry for you, myspace people.
I think I will go to bed now. |

The last two days have been a good reminder that there is something new and different and good on the way, that moving from place to place will not always be a painful experience to be protected against and dreaded, and that the unwelcoming icy months aren't just in between, but directly give rise to new life beginning again.
That's why I'll miss the seasons- not because I'm a glutton for punishment, or because I think you need pain to know what happiness is- but because life isn't always 70 degrees and sunny, and it's good to have the world remind you ever year that the miserable days never last forever. |

I find myself greatly annoyed with everyone I encounter today. And yesterday too, really. Except Cecil the library security guard. Never with Cecil. Perhaps I will marry Cecil if it doesn't work out with Myles for some reason. Except that would probably annoy Cecil's wife, which would just begin the cycle of irritation all over again, wouldn't it?
On the other hand, I just got my first positive response to an application I sent out (making it 1 response out of at least 50 attempts in the last few months). Of course, from that response, I gleaned that the woman hadn't actually read my resume or cover letter, based on the fact that she doesn't know I currently live in Indiana, but hey, it's a start. |

[Jan. 15th, 2007|09:54 am] |
This week was good. Being at home reminds me of how much I would have moped had I stayed here a week without Myles. The beach is an excellent place to sit and let your thoughts catch up with your life, I must say. The trip (orchestra tour to Florida) was also an interesting introduction to the almost-forgotten freshman year promises of the "Notre Dame family." It made me wish that we had gone to Southern California this year instead of two years ago, because the people I stayed with all wanted to find my unskilled, unconnected self a job.
So, I'm heading off in a few hours, after lunch with the fam, to one last semester. It's already filled up, I feel like- a weekend here, a weekend there, SPRING BREAK ARKANSAS 2007 WOOO! (we need a better name), thesis deadlines, etc. But let's make it a good one.
Anyway, I'm going to go pack, awkwardly, near the furnace man. |

| | the librizzle beeps a lot | ] | Well, I've officially lost all motivation to study for my final again tomorrow, bringing the world's easiest finals week (brought to you by fake Spanish and a whole lot of papers during the semester, as well as the letter Q) to an unofficial end. I've still got about an hour of studying left for this one, and I intend to spend my 3 hours Thursday morning at work studying for Spanish, but no more. So, now I have 3 days to work on my thesis, which will hopefully make up for the fact that I've only worked on it for about 10 or 15 hours all semester.
It's odd how time changes over 4 years of college- I measured freshman year in insurmountable papers, overwhelming amounts of material, and quality time laughing at things with my newfound amigos. Now, it's hours. 10 pages = 5 hours + 2 hours for internet procrastinating and talking to Myles + 1 hour for breadsticks if 2 out of 3 breadstick dependable friends also have assignments due - 1 hour for superproductive efficiency when I get tired of writing and want to go to bed, or alternatively, when the paper is due in an hour. I've learned how to turn ideas into manageable nuggets (cleverly always noted with page numbers to save time during the citation process) that can be shifted around and whose contribution to the overwhelming theme can be easily recognized. It's really not all that different from math or science, I think, just a little messier and the answer in the back of the book is slightly more up to the eye of the bespectacled beholder.
That being said, I really love it.
Did you know that if we used the most common international measure of poverty, 55 million people (20% of the US population) would be living below the poverty line? And that 15.6 million of those are living below half the poverty line?
So here are my goals before Friday- figure out how to reunify the Christian church, and then find a job that will allow me to tackle poverty next year.
But after Friday, I'm going to rest. Rest, be with the people I love, and with God. Because every time I've taken the time to do that lately, I've felt guilty, and that's not how we're supposed to be. We are more than movers and changers, we're beings... and I for one need to remember why I am bothering to be. Otherwise, what's the reason for putting the thoughts down on paper? |
